On 12th June 2023, the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023 (“the Data Protection Act” or “the Act”) was signed into law, ushering in a new era of enhanced protection for personal data. This legislation is set to not only regulate the processing of personal data but also introduces numerous innovative provisions that serve as the very foundation for data protection in Nigeria.

This is the first part in the Data Protection Series, in which we highlight the application of the Data Protection Act as well as the new regulator under the Act. In the next couple of weeks, we aim to examine the newly introduced provisions in the Act and how these provisions impact the legal and regulatory landscape of data protection in Nigeria.
